Categories and tags
Two ways to organise your movements: one fixed, one free
Two tools, two approaches
Cuéntamo gives you two complementary classification systems:
- Categories: define what a movement is — Groceries, Restaurants, Salary, Mortgage. Each movement has a single category. They work like folders.
- Tags: define why or for whom — "Lisbon holiday", "Kitchen renovation", "Beach apartment". A movement can have many at once. They work like sticky notes.
You manage them from Settings, in the Categories and Tags tabs respectively.
Categories: global and custom
Global ones come built-in: Groceries, Restaurants, Fuel, Mortgage, Salary, Subscriptions… Everyone uses them. They can't be edited or deleted.
Custom ones are those you create for your specific needs: a hobby, a pet, a side business. They only exist in your book. You edit, rename or delete them freely.
Create a category
In Settings → Categories, fill in:
- Icon: thousands available from four libraries. Search by keyword: "dog", "guitar", "motorbike", "Spotify"…
- Name: short and clear. It's what you'll see in movements, filters and charts.
- Type: Expense, Income or Both.
- Colour: the one used in donut charts and visual labels.
Deductibility (freelancers)
If you use the freelance module, deductibility (business use and deductible VAT) is no longer set here. Deductibility profiles are defined in Settings → Freelance → "Deductibility profiles" and assigned to both categories and tags. We explain it in the freelance module article.
Create a tag
In Settings → Tags, or on the fly from a movement's editor. Each tag has:
- Name: what identifies the trip, project or concept.
- Colour: to recognise it at a glance.
- Icon (optional): if you want to distinguish it further.
You can also assign tags in bulk from Movements and Classification. More details in the dedicated article: Tags.
Examples of each
Categories (one per movement):
- "Vet" — expense, paw icon, green.
- "Padel" — expense, racquet icon, orange.
- "Private lessons" — income, book icon, blue.
Tags (several per movement):
- "Lisbon holiday" — for flights, hotel, restaurants and taxis of the trip.
- "Beach apartment" — for rent, service charges, insurance and council tax of that property.
- "Ana's wedding" — for outfit, gift, travel and hotel for the wedding.
Edit, archive and delete
Categories: edit icon, name, type or colour with the pencil. You can only delete a custom one if it has no movements — if it does, move them to another one from Classification.
Tags: edit name, colour and icon. If a tag is no longer useful, archive it: it disappears from selectors but movements that had it keep it intact. If it has no movements, it's deleted directly.
When to use each one
- Is it a permanent and exclusive classification (an expense can only be one thing)? → Category.
- Do you want to group movements from different categories by a temporal or cross-cutting criterion? → Tag.
- A few well-chosen categories (15–25) are worth more than many confusing ones. With tags, on the other hand, create as many as you need and archive those that end.
- Icons matter: in charts, mobile and compact views, you recognise them faster than text.
